Bicycle Safety and Registration
A bicyclist is injured every five hours in Wisconsin. Even the most experienced cyclist can't control the actions of motorists. When taking your bike out for a ride, the following are some simple steps to help assure a safe bike ride.
1. Ride a bicycle that fits you, not one that is too big or too small.
2. Do a brief safety inspection (brakes, tires, pedals, etc.) before each ride.
3. Wear a helmet, good shoes (which are tied), and have no loose clothing.
4. Ride with a friend on a familiar route, on the right side of the road.
5. Keep your bicycle's speed at a pace that you can control.
6. Obey all traffic rules, and do not assume the driver of a vehicle sees you. Ride defensively for your own protection.
7. Do not be embarrassed to walk your bicycle across a busy intersection.
8. Use hand signals to let other traffic know where you intend to go.
9. Watch for broken glass, potholes, or car doors opening into traffic.
10. Lock your bicycle and register it with the police department. Call the Wauwatosa Police Department for free registration information.
Remember to always let someone know where you are going and what time you plan to return. Use the buddy system. Carry money to make a phone call in case of an emergency. Walk your bike if you get caught in the rain or darkness. Be safe and have an excellent bike ride!
