How do I get a bartender's license?

When does the Common Council meet?

The Wauwatosa Common Council, with some exceptions, meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month (in August they meet only on the first Tuesday). All meetings are open to the public. Check the website Calendar for further information and links to agendas.

When do the standing Common Council committees meet?

With some exceptions, the standing committees of the Common Council meet on the second and last Tuesdays of each month. (There are no committee meetings in August and no "last Tuesday" meeting in December.) All meetings are open to the public. Check the website Calendar for further information and links to agendas.

What are the standing committee of the Common Council?

The standing committees of the Common Council are: Employee Relations; Legislation, Licensing & Communications; Traffic & Safety; Budget & Finance; and Community Development. The city's 16 alderpersons are each assigned by the Mayor to two standing committees. The standing committees are advisory to the Common Council.

May I speak at a Common Council or Council committee meeting?

The public may comment on agenda items at appropriate times destermined by the committee chair during meetings of the standing committees of the Common Council. Aside from public hearings on specific agenda items, there is no provision for public comment at Common Council meetings.

How can I bring a concern to the Common Council's attention?

Click on Elected Officials on the home page's top navigation line for information on contacting specific alderpersons by phone or e-mail. (Confirm your aldermanic district by using the Search button in the middle of the home page. After entering your address, district/ward information will be displayed on the results page.) Direct letters to the Common Council c/o the City Clerk's office. Communications must include the name and address of the sender. They are referred to the appropriate staff/department for follow-up, placed on file, or added to an existing file. If necessary following staff review, a communication with an accompanying staff report may be forwarded to an appropriate standing committee of the Common Council.

What do I need to do if I'm interested in serving as an alderperson?

Alderpersons are elected to four-year terms that expire in April of even-numbered years. The two alderperson seats for each district expire on a rotating basisl; i.e., one seat in each district is up for election every two years. Candidate packets are available at the City Clerk's office the prior November. Watch for information on the city website and in local newspapers. When an alderperson resigns during his/her term of office, it is necessary to either elect or appoint (depending on the timing of the resignation) a new alderperson. All information on the filing/application process would be published as a legal notice in WauwatosaNOW and would also appear on the city's website. Alderperson candidates must be at least 18 years of age and residents of the aldermanic district for which they are applying. They attend Common Council and committee meetings a minimum of four evenings per month. The monthly pay is $350.
