Frequently asked questions about employment opportunities and applying for a job with the City.

What jobs does the City of Wauwatosa hire for?

The City of Wauwatosa hires for the following areas: City Hall, Library, Public Works (including the Street, Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance, Water, Parks and Forestry divisions), Police and Fire. Positions for the Wauwatosa school district are not a part of the City. Applicants interested in working for the Wauwatosa School District must contact the Wauwatosa School District Human Resources Department at (414) 773-1040.

How do I find out which positions are available and how do I apply for a job?

The City of Wauwatosa will accept applications for open positions only. Available positions are posted on this website under "Jobs" and the Employment Opportunities bulletin board located in City Hall. Interested applicants must complete an Application for Employment along with any additional information requested. Application materials must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by the application deadline. Applications will be accepted in person, by mail or email. Faxes will not be accepted.

What is the process after I file an application with the City?

Once a posting has ended, the Human Resources Department will screen all applications received. The City reserves the right to invite only the best qualified candidates to continue in the selection process. The selection process will be job-related and will consist of one or more of the following: Training and experience evaluation, written oral or performance tests. All candidates will be notified by mail of their application status.

Once an examination has been administered, all candidates will be notified by mail of whether they passed the exam or not. Those passing the exam may be invited back for an interview and/or additional testing. The City reserves the right to call back those that scored the highest on the examination for additional testing. The City of Wauwatosa generally narrows the list of candidates down to the top ten. This list is presented to and approved by the Civil Service Commission. Some positions are not governed by Civil Service rules do not have to be approved by the Civil Service Commission. The supervisor of the hiring department will make his/her selection from this list.

What if I am interested in a job that is not currently available?

Applicants interested in employment with the City of Wauwatosa may fill out a Job Interest Card if the type of work they are interested in is not currently available. The Human Resources Department will keep these cards on file for a period of one year. If the position is open for recruitment during the one year period, the Human Resources Department will automatically send the application to the candidate. It is the responsibility of the candidate to check on the status of their card to see if it is still current.

Does the City hire seasonal employees?

The City of Wauwatosa will, from time to time, hire for seasonal positions. This may include snow plowing in the Winter, leaf collection in the Fall and Summer help. Several departments in the Public Works division may ask for additional help in the Summer. The jobs include garbage collection in the Streets division, plant maintenance in the Parks division, tree-trimming assistance in the Forestry division, painting of fire hydrants in the Water division, help in the Mechanical Maintenance division and surveying and sump pump meter readings in the Engineering division. Those interested in applying for these jobs may do so by filling out a Job Interest Card.
