Frequently Asked Questions about Police Services and Safety Issues

How do I apply for a Block Party Permit?

Petition forms can be obtained at the Police Department Monday thru Friday from 8 AM to 11 PM.  Wauwatosa City Ordinance states that any party that includes occupying the street right of way requires a permit that must be returned to the Police Department at least 3 weeks prior to the event.

Where is the Police Department located?

The Police Department is located at 1700 North 116 Street, Wauwatosa, WI 53226.

What are the hours and phone numbers for the Police Department?

The Wauwatosa Police Officers serve the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The business office serving the general public is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 11 PM.  On Saturday and Sunday, the building is closed, reopening Monday at 8 AM.  On all holidays, the building will close at 11 PM the night prior and reopen at 8 AM the next regular business day.

The Police Records Department is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM.  The non-emergency phone is 471-8430.  In Case of Emergency dial 911.

Where do I go for Municipal Court and when is it held?

Municipal Court is held at City Hall at 7725 West North Avenue on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 PM.  Indigency Hearings and parking ticket reviews are scheduled at 5:30 PM.

Where do I go to pay tickets?

Municipal citations, both traffic and non-traffic, can be paid at the Police Department before Court and after the court date at City Hall in the Court Clerks' office.  Parking citations can be dropped off at the Police Department, City Hall, or mailed with payment to City of Wauwatosa Citation Processing Center, PO Box 3214, Milwaukee, WI 53201-3214.  Parking Tickets can also be accessed online for information and payment using the following link: https://step1.caledoncard.com/tickets/wauwatosa.html

Can I park my car on the street overnight?

By City Ordinance there is no parking on any street between 3 AM and 6 AM, including holidays and weekends.   Special permission for overnight parking can be obtained by calling 1-900-388-2800.  Overnight permission is limited only to guests, stalled vehicles and vehicles affected by a construction project which makes off street parking impossible.  The 900 number is $1.50 per call.

How many officers and support staff are on the Police Department?

The Department has an authorized strength of 89 sworn officers and employs approximately 30 non-sworn support staff members.

Are Wauwatosa Police Officers required to be Wauwatosa residents?

Only Department heads, such as the Chief of Police, are required to live in Wauwatosa. However approximately 22 of our officers do live in the City of Wauwatosa.

If I lock my keys in my car, can the Police Department help me?

Our Department only performs auto lockouts in emergencies, such as when an infant is locked in the car.

If I have a minor car accident, should I still call the police?

It is best to report all accidents to the police even minor ones.  If the damage is over $1,000 a state report must be filled out.  In the case of minor accidents it allows documentation of driver information for insurance purposes.

Are there always officers on patrol?

Yes.  Officers working in some areas of the city even start work an hour early to help ensure that there are always officers on patrol.  Each shift has varying minimum staffing requirements.

What should I do if my pet runs away?

You may call the Police Department's non-emergency phone number to advise us of a pet you have lost or found.  We do keep a logbook of missing pets.  If you lose or find a pet, also call The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.  Their non-emergency phone number is 649-8640.  Their emergency phone number is 274-9275.  MADACC is responsible for housing stray pets in the Milwaukee area.  They are located at 3839 W. Burnham Street in West Milwaukee.  MADACC also has a website, which features photos of pets they are holding.

How many Calls for Service does the Police Department handle a year?

The Wauwatosa Police Department provides 24-hour service to the community.  In 2004 the Wauwatosa Police Department received 32,085 calls for police service. P>

How many traffic citations are written per year?

The Department issued 6,906 traffic citaions in the year 2004.P>

How many non-traffic citations are written by the Department per year?

 2,673 non-trafic citations were issued in 2004. 2,873 non-traffic citations were issued in 2003. 2,479 non-traffic citations were issued in 2001.   2,525 non-traffic citations were issued in the year 2000.

How many parking citations are issued per year?

15, 394 parking citations were issued in 2004. 17,011 parking citations were issued in 2003. The Department issued 17,725 parking citations in 2002.  18,124 parking citations were issued in the year 2001.  In 2000 the Department issued 17,903 parking citations. 

How do I find out about registered sex offenders in my community?

In 1997, the State of Wisconsin enacted the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notifiction Law.  This law was created to monitor and track people convicted of sex crimes and to provide access to this information for police, victims and the general public.

An Internet Web site is maintained by the state Department of Corrections.  Visitors to the site can identify offenders with searches by name or ZIP code.

What is a False Alarm and why is there a penalty?

False alarm means a signal from an alarm system resulting in a response by the Police Department when an emergency situation did not exist.
Each false alarm requires response by public safety personnel, involves unnecessary expense to the city, increases the risk of injury to persons or damage to property, and dilutes the overall public safety protection to the city.  Such false alarms constitute a public nuisance and must be abated.  Persons connected to an alarm system in accordance with Ordinance 7.08.005 shall: Pay to the city a charge for false alarms responded by the police according to the following schedule for each calendar year for each premise connected.

False Alarm Fees are as follow:
1st alarm     No Charge
2nd alarm        $30.00
3rd alarm         $30.00
4th alarm         $30.00
5th alarm         $70.00
6th alarm         $70.00
7th alarm         $70.00
8th alarm         $70.00
9th alarm        $100.00
10th alarm      $100.00
11th and each subsequent false alarm,  $200.00

Note: Alarm fees not paid by November 15th will be placed on the property tax bill.

How do I prevent a False Alarm?

1. Before leaving, check that all exterior doors ar closed and locked.
2. Before leaving, check that all motion sensor areas are clear of moving signs, displays, reflective/helium balloons, etc.
3. Know hot to cancel a false alarm quickly.
4. All personnel should be periodically trained in proper alarm operating procedures and false alarm prevention.
5. Report any arming or disarming problems to your alarm company immediately.
