1. Can I park my car on the street overnight?

Per City Ordinance Chapter 11.32.290 there is no parking on any street between 3:00 am and 6:00 am, including holidays and weekends.

Overnight Parking Permission is limited to:

* guests
* stalled vehicles
* vehicles affected by a construction project which makes off street parking impossible

2. What should I do with old or expired medications in my house?

The Wauwatosa Police Department, in coordination with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District, has undertaken a program to safely, securely, and environmentally collect and dispose of old or expired or unused prescription and over-the-counter medications. 3. Where do I go to pay a ticket (including parking)?

Municipal citations, both traffic and non-traffic, can be paid at the Police Department up to one day before the assigned court date OR on the court date or after the court date, at City Hall in the Court Clerks' office located at:
7725 W. North Ave.

4. How do I apply for a block party permit?

Wauwatosa City Ordinance states that any party that includes occupying the street right of way requires a permit that must be returned to the Police Department at least three weeks prior to the event.

5. If I lock my keys in my car, can the Police Department help me?

Our Department only performs auto lockouts in emergencies, such as when an infant is locked in the car.

6. Where do I go for Municipal Court and when is it held?

Municipal Court is held at City Hall at 7725 W. North Ave. on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 PM. Indigency Hearings and parking ticket reviews are scheduled at 5:30 PM.

7. Where is the Police Department located?

The Police Department is located at 1700 N. 116 St., Wauwatosa, WI 53226. We are on N. 116 St. between W. North Ave. and Watertown Plank Road.

8. What are the hours and phone numbers for the Police Department?

The Wauwatosa Police Officers serve the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Business Office serving the general public is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the building is closed, reopening Monday at 8:00 am. On all holidays, the building will close at 11:00 pm the night prior and reopen at 8:00 am the next regular business day.

The Records Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

9. Are there always officers on patrol?

Yes. While the department runs on three shifts to provide 24-hour coverage, the start time of some officers on each shift is staggered so that there are always officers on the road, on patrol, to serve and protect the citizens.

10. How many officers and support staff are on the Police Department?

The Department has an authorized strength of 94 sworn officers and employs approximately 30 non-sworn support staff members.

11. Are Wauwatosa Police Officers required to be Wauwatosa residents?

Only Department heads, such as the Chief of Police, are required to live in Wauwatosa. However, approximately one in three of our officers choose to reside in the city.

12. How many Calls for Service does the Police Department handle a year?

The Wauwatosa Police Department provides 24-hour service to the community. In 2011, the Wauwatosa Police Department responded to 31,102 calls for police service.

13. If I have a minor car accident, should I still call the police?

It is best to report all accidents to the police, even minor ones. If the damage is over $1,000, or if anyone is injured, a state report must be filled out. Even in the case of minor accidents, calling the police allows documentation of driver information for insurance purposes.

14. What should I do if my pet runs away?

You may call the Police Department's non-emergency phone number, (414) 471-8430, to advise us of a pet you have lost or found. We do keep a logbook of missing pets.

15. How do I find out about registered sex offenders in my community?

In 1997, the State of Wisconsin enacted the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notifiction Law. This law was created to monitor and track people convicted of sex crimes and to provide access to this information for police, victims and the general public.

An Internet Web site is maintained by the state Department of Corrections. Visitors to the site can identify offenders with searches by name or ZIP code.

16. What is a False Alarm and why is there a penalty?

False alarm means a signal from an alarm system resulting in a response by the Police Department when an emergency situation did not exist.

Because false alarms require response by public safety personnel, involve unnecessary expense to the city, increase the risk of injury to persons or damage to property, and dilute the overall public safety protection to the city. Per City Ordinance 7.08.005, persons connected to an alarm system shall pay to the city a charge for false alarms responded to by the police department.

Note: Alarm fees not paid by November 15th will be placed on the property tax bill.
