2017 Sewer Rate Increases
Overview
Started in 2012 and continuing for the next 7-10 years, Wauwatosa is strategically undertaking multiple large sewer rebuilding projects to replace pipes at the end of their useful life. Most of the sewer infrastructure was installed 75-100 years ago. Between 2012 and 2015, the City repaired
and/or replaced 159,967 feet, or almost 30 miles, of sanitary sewer and 55,090 feet, or about 10.4 miles, of storm sewer. All infrastructure replacements are intended to provide Wauwatosa residents and businesses with a greatly improved sewer infrastructure that addresses basement backups, surface flooding, and pipe failure problems experienced over the past several years.

Sanitary Sewer Rates
The sanitary sewer portion of your water utility bill will increase by about 6% in 2017. Based on average residential water consumption, the sanitary sewer charge will increase from $105.86 to $112.55 per quarter or from $35.29 to $37.52 per month.

The 2018-2021 rates are estimates only and will require subsequent Common Council approval.

Water Rates
The water rates are regulated by the Public Service Commission which approved a 19.87% increase (depending on meter size and consumption). Depending on your billing cycle, the full rate increase will go into effect by May 2017. The increase in the rates was necessary to finance water meter and main replacements. The City is in the final stages of upgrading all residential water meters and in 2015 replaced or relined 14,309 feet of water mains – approximately 2.71 miles. Given the age of the City’s water mains, an on-going replacement program is planned.  The average water bill, including the public fire protection charge, will increase from $102.06 to $121.82 per quarter or from $34.02 to $40.61.

Average Monthly Household Costs
The average residential total quarterly bill including charges for water, sanitary and storm sewer will increase from $233.30 in 2016 to $262.29, approximately a $29.00 or 12.4% increase.  Despite these rate increases, your total water bill remains less than most other monthly household costs.
