Household Battery Recycling
Batery Bucket_thumb.png

Battery recycling is a recycling activity that aims to reduce the number of batteries being disposed as municipal solid waste. Recycling is the environmentally preferable choice. If you can collect and recycle alkalines, you should. While they may no longer be considered hazardous waste, they still contain elements that can harm the environment, especially given the number of single-use batteries being disposed of each year.

The City’s Department of Public Works has been receiving increased inquiries regarding the proper disposal of household batteries. Because of this the department has placed containers to collect household batteries at City Hall by the Clerk’s Office, Outside the Lower Civic Center, and The Public Works Building. Just look for the bucket!

Battery Recycling Benefits

According the EPA, these are some benefits of recycling:

  • Reduction in waste sent to landfills
  • Conservation of natural resources, such as metals and minerals
  • Helps prevent pollution by reducing the need to collect new, raw materials
  • Saves energy
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change
  • Helps sustain the environment for future generations
  • Helps create new, well-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States
  • Once the materials are recycled they can be reused in making new products
