Special Collection Services
Overview
The city offers several types of special collections for large items and/or waste materials for a fee. These items include:
- Large piles of unbundled branches or brush
- Major household appliances
- Large / bulky items such as discarded furniture, household equipment, and excessive clean-outs which exceed size and weight limitations
Cost Estimate
A cost estimate and specific details regarding each type of special collection can be obtained by calling the Department of Public Works Operations Division at (414) 471-8422.
To avoid or lessen these charges, you are encouraged to dispose of the above items at
the
Drop-Off Center located at 11100 W. Walnut Rd. any Tuesday through Saturday
from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Operational Rules
As of January 1, 2009 the following guidelines cover the “special collections” and drop-offs for Wauwatosa residents in 1-4 family dwellings. As a supervisor normally approves and schedules each “special collection” and an estimate of charges may be given in advance to the resident. Under no conditions can a “special collection” be made without a charge except at the direction of a supervisor, superintendent, or the Director of Public Works. (Backyard pick-up fee is $100 for 2010)
Appliance Special Pick-Ups
Appliances containing Freon Mercury Switches, and / or PCB Capacitors are listed below. These appliances require a $50 fee to be picked up ($25 for pick up and $25 for recycling processing) for the 1st appliance and a $30 pick up fee for each additional appliance picked up on the same trip. These items are collected by city crews using the "appliance" truck and are deposited in the appliance area at the Drop-off Center.

Garbage Special Pick-ups
There is a minimum $50 pick-up fee for the first item, plus $5 for each additional item. Items are picked up by the garbage crews on regular garbage collection days whenever possible, after approval by a supervisor, subject to minimum charges as follows (
NOTE: These items can be brought to the Public Works Drop-Off Center at no additional charge with a $20 permit).

Yard Waste Special Pick-ups
There is a minimum $55 pick-up fee for yard waste. Material is picked up after approval from supervisor and signed written approval by resident within 10 days (or after 10 days without approval), typically on Fridays.
Note: These items can be dropped off free at the Department of Public Works Drop-off Center (Yard Waste Area)

Fees For Residential & Commercial Drop-offs
An annual drop-off permit for $20 per household covers residents and non-resident/owners fo no more than one rental property. A $5 Daily Permit is also available for residients.
Wauwatosa based commercial businessess doing business in Wauwatosa can purchase a Commercial Permit for $25 and pay for scaled weights of garbage, recyclables and/or yard waste. The fee for scaled weight is $55 per ton.
