Committee recommends next steps on Life Science District

Look at the master plan for this area and learn what's next
Post Date:06/27/2018 2:20 PM

life sciencesThe Community Affairs Committee recommended next steps to city staff on the Life Sciences District Master Plan. The discussion about this area had previously been on hold. Watch the discussion online. Note that the Life Sciences discussion starts at about 1 hour, 24 minutes.

The Life Sciences District Master Plan encompasses 1,200 acres and offers ideas and guidance for the areas surrounding Interstate 41, Mayfair Road from Center Street to Blue Mound Road, and Watertown Plank Road from Mayfair Road to the historic Village. Most of this land is currently and has been historically zoned to support County institutional use for medical and supportive services.

The Community Affairs Committee recommended the following next steps on this plan:

  • Modify the portion of the plan that relates to the Northeast Quadrant. They recommended identifying the future land use for this area as Special Purpose District - Conservation.
  • Remove any text, maps, etc. not consistent with the map that was attached to the memo.
  • Take the final Wauwatosa Life Sciences District Master Plan to the Plan Commission for review.

There are a few conditions:

  • Continue to have open conversation with stakeholders prior to the Plan Commission
  • Consider the Natural Resource Report from SEWRPC and the existing Guidelines of the Habitat Protection Plan to recognize habitat and species concerns
  • Include and prioritize the rezoning parcels of the Northeast Quadrant conservancy and preservation of all parcels identified as Special Purpose District - Conservation
  • Recognize the conditions of the May 9, 2017 hold action in the event any development proposal in the Northeast Quadrant comes forward prior to Wauwatosa Life Sciences District Master Plan is adopted
