Floating Wetland Islands at Hartung Park

Post Date:09/04/2018 10:24 AM

The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works recently awarded a contract to construct a series of floating wetland islands in the pond at Hartung Park.  The islands are made of recycled base material that provide the buoyancy and are then topped with soil and planted with native perennials.

The goal of this project is to improve water quality in the pond (and downstream Menomonee River) by allowing for the natural interaction between the nutrients in the pond and the plant roots to reduce pollutants in the water.  The islands will also create habitat for wildlife.

The work is planned for the week of September 4-7.
