Join us for Hoops: Wheelchair Basketball
Inclusive 3x3 basketball league and open gyms
In collaboration with Wauwatosa Recreation, The Ability Center plans to organize the country’s first and only, inclusive, 3v3 Wheelchair Basketball league. Disability not required. Additionally, there are a few opportunities to learn about adaptive sports, including instruction from experienced adaptive athletes from Wisconsin Thunder. See below for upcoming opportunities. Contact Damian Buchman, Founder & Executive Director at AFAR, at (262) 385-5738 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Kickoff the season by attending a wheelchair basketball game on January 4, 6 - 9 pm at Whitman Middle School. This "Discover Ability Open Gym" takes place on the first Friday of each month at Whitman Middle School, 6 - 9 pm. Anyone can attend and learn about adaptive sports in a fun, non-competitive environment. Equipment is provided. Damian Buchman, founder and director of the AFAR, encourages everyone to participate:
"Many able-bodied Tosans have told me they really enjoy these wheelchair and adaptive opportunities because it gets them back in the game, after they had assumed an old knee injury took them out of athletics for good. As we like to say: 'It’s just a different pair of shoes.'”
Wheelchair Basketball League
Join us for competitive game play with a brief weekly tutorial on how to use adaptive equipment. Each week, experienced adaptive athletes from the Wisconsin Thunder will play on each team. This is a co-ed league held at Jefferson Elementary on Thursday nights, 6:30 - 8 pm between January 10 and March 31. The cost is $25 per player, and you can register as an individual, or as part of a team. Contact the Wauwatosa Recreation Department for more information and to register.
