The City of Wauwatosa and Froedtert Hospital have reached a $10 million settlement agreement related to property taxes for the years 2021 through 2024. Froedtert Hospital paid more than $33 million during those years for its Main Campus and Bluemound Campus. Like many academic medical center campuses, these properties include both tax-exempt space and taxable space.

Froedtert Hospital disputed how some of those spaces were assessed, and the City and Froedtert Hospital worked together to reach a resolution that avoids further litigation and benefits both parties. As part of the agreement, the City will refund $10 million to Froedtert Hospital, an amount which will be shared between all taxing jurisdictions. The City and Froedtert Hospital have also agreed upon a reasonable assessment methodology of certain property taxes going forward.

The City of Wauwatosa is proud to have Froedtert Hospital located within the City of Wauwatosa and values its positive impact to the City’s economy and the health and wellbeing of its workforce and citizens.

This outcome provides clarity for the City’s budget planning and helps ensure Froedtert Hospital can continue providing top-tier, comprehensive academic medicine – including operating the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and advanced cancer, transplant, heart and vascular and orthopedic care – to residents of Wauwatosa, Greater Milwaukee, and beyond.
