Creating Safer Streets in Wauwatosa

New, targeted street design changes are helping to make two crash-prone intersections safer.
Post Date:10/22/2025 11:04 AM

The City of Wauwatosa continues to make targeted traffic calming improvements at key neighborhood intersections to support safer, calmer streets for all users. These changes respond to community feedback and traffic data showing that even small design updates can make a meaningful difference in how drivers navigate residential areas.

73rd Street and Lloyd Street

The intersection of 73rd and Lloyd Street was identified as the city’s highest crash minor street intersection, with 11 reported crashes between 2020 and 2024. Three of those crashes involved injuries, including one to a child bicyclist.
To improve safety, curb extensions have been added to narrow the roadway and shorten pedestrian crossing distances. This design reduces the perceived width of the street, encouraging drivers to slow down and proceed with greater caution through the area.

Wauwatosa Avenue and Wright Street

At Wauwatosa Avenue and Wright Street, similar curb extensions have been installed to create a safer, more predictable environment for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The addition of flashing pedestrian lights further improves visibility and helps reduce vehicle speeds, especially during peak travel times.

These safety improvements are funded through Wauwatosa’s vehicle registration fee, which supports roadway and traffic control infrastructure projects, as well as street maintenance projects such as pothole patching, sealcoating, crack filling, and pavement marking.
