The City of Wauwatosa’s Police and Fire Commission unanimously appointed Barbara Kadrich as Fire Chief, marking the first time a woman has held the role in the city’s history.
Kadrich brings 30 years of experience in the fire service and will lead the department during a transitional period as Wauwatosa and West Allis will be merging into a joint fire department in early 2027. The appointment comes as the cities prepare for a national search for the permanent chief of the future joint fire department, Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue.
“Chief Kadrich brings an impressive resume and extensive experience in the fire service. She has consistently demonstrated professionalism and strong leadership throughout her career, and I am confident she will serve our community with dignity and compassion,” said Danielle Basil Long, chair of the Wauwatosa Police and Fire Commission. “I look forward to working with her in this new capacity.”
Chief Kadrich issued the following statement:
“I am honored to serve in this role and proud to lead such an exceptional fire department. Wauwatosa Fire has always set a high standard, and I still remember walking through the doors of the old Station 1 on my first day - it shaped who I am today. Being one of the first women hired and now in this role is meaningful, and I’ve been fortunate to have strong support from those around me who recognize the value of leadership, built on experience, commitment, and trust.
I am here because of the unwavering support of my husband, Al, and my two sons, Hunter and Max, along with the mentorship and guidance I’ve received from incredible people both within the fire service and beyond (many people to thank).
I am committed to maintaining the highest level of service to our community while continuing to build a department our members are proud to be part of. As we move through this transition and toward a merged department, we will stay focused, forward-thinking, and united in creating something even stronger for the future.”
The announcement comes during Women’s History Month, offering an opportunity to recognize both the significance of the appointment and the evolving role of women in public safety leadership.
She may be the first woman to serve as Fire Chief in Milwaukee County - a milestone we’re continuing to verify.
