As Wauwatosa and West Allis work toward the official operational launch of Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue in early 2027, several key milestones have been reached to ensure the new department is ready to serve both communities seamlessly.

  • The governing board for Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue has met twice. Much of the work has been organizational. The board has:
    • adopted a purchasing policy
    • discussed a branding process for the agency
    • designated the formal collective bargaining team on behalf of the Board
    • initiated the recruitment process for the Fire Chief
  • The collective bargaining process has just begun but in earnest. Ideally, we will conclude well before the end of this year.
  • Monthly coordination meetings are happening to manage the complex logistics of merging two distinct departments.

What’s Next?

Throughout the remainder of 2026, residents can expect to see more updates about the progress of this merger.

The Governing Board meets monthly in person, rotating between the two cities. There is also a virtual option for people to follow. You can see upcoming meetings on the city's meeting portal.

The Fire Commission is expected to have its first meeting in May 2026. They oversee hiring, firing, and discipline of the joint fire department as outlined in
state law.
