Wildlife Habitat Initiative

Certify Your Yard as a Wildlife Habitat

Wauwatosa is working toward becoming a certified Wildlife Habitat Community through the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). To reach this goal, we need 400 total points from residential gardens, schools, and public spaces.

How to Participate

You can help Tosa earn points by certifying your own yard or garden. To qualify, your space must provide these five essential elements:

  • Food for other species, including seeds, berries, nectar
  • Water for health and cleanliness. This might be a bird bath, pond, or shallow dishes with rocks.
  • Cover for safety. This includes trees, shrubs, brush piles, rock walls, or wildflowers.
  • A safe place for young, such as planting host plants, nesting boxes, bee hotels, a pond
  • Sustainability - use no chemicals that can harm creatures indoors and out

Track Our Progress

Wauwatosa needs a total of 400 points based on our population. This includes 250 from local properties to complete our certification:

  • Private Residences: 1 point
  • Parks, businesses, HOA common areas, places of worship, farms, universities, and municipal buildings: 3 points
  • Schools: 5 points

Gardens of all sizes can be certified, and the Tosa Wildlife Habitat team can provide resources and direction as gardeners join the movement.
