Overview

Our duty is to protect and preserve human life in the event of a trauma-related incident or a serious medical condition. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responds by:

  • Assessing
  • Treating
  • Stabilizing
  • Transporting Patients

Each fire department unit is staffed by certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Paramedics, who are trained and monitored by the staff of the Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Service (MCEMS) and the medical direction of Dr. Ben Weston.

Operations

All Wauwatosa Fire Department members are trained at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level. In addition, we currently have 56 firefighters trained to the Paramedic level to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS). The division’s ambulances are strategically located in fire stations throughout the city. These ambulances are supplied with state-of-the-art equipment, and coupled with our highly trained personnel, are an emergency room on wheels — capable of handling a variety of life saving procedures.

EMT-Paramedics receive 40 hours of continuing education each year in addition to their initial training, which per national standards, covers areas such as:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Basic Pediatric Care
  • Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support

We currently operate three ambulances including two paramedic (ALS) and one Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance. Our fire apparatus are staffed by EMTs and sometimes paramedics depending on daily staffing. If staffed by paramedics, these fire trucks are equipped and can operate as Paramedic First Responders (PFR) and begin ALS care until an ambulance arrives.

When you call 911 for a medical emergency, we normally dispatch the closet fire truck and ambulance to assist you. The personnel on the fire truck assist the ambulance crew with patient care and movement of equipment as needed.
