Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART)
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, you can request assistance from our Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART).
CART pairs a trained clinician with a specially trained police officer to assist individuals in crisis. Together, they assess the situation, provide immediate support, and connect individuals with the resources they need. Our goal is to improve outcomes for those facing mental health challenges.
Mission of CART:
Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services (BHS) collaborated resources with law enforcement to form Crisis Assessment Response Team (CART). CART teams are made up of a sworn law enforcement officer partnered with a licensed mental health clinician. CART is primarily responsible for the following:
- Providing mental health assistance to individuals in need with the goal of reducing the number of Emergency Detentions.
- Providing on-site clinical evaluations, stabilization and assessment when it is impossible or impractical for the individual to travel to MHEC.
- Initiating involuntary treatment (emergency detentions) when appropriate.
- Collecting and maintaining information regarding recipients served and issues presented.
- Conducting proactive, follow-up visits with those citizens having frequent mental health related police contacts in the attempt to decrease the number of crisis related calls for service.
- Advocating for citizens and directing them to mental health services to help reduce homelessness, reduce victimization, reduce substance and minimize contact with law enforcement and utilization of emergency services.
