Food Waste and Yard Debris Prevention and Management

Organic waste, including leaves and yard debris, food waste, and inedible food scraps, is the largest category of waste found in Wisconsin landfills in the most recent statewide waste characterization study from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Wasted food, which refers to edible food (not bones, peels, or other inedible scraps) that is discarded or allowed to spoil was the largest single category of material in Wisconsin’s landfills, making up 14.5% of materials sent to landfills. Over 1.2 billion pounds of formerly edible food was landfilled in Wisconsin in 2020, contributing to the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Reducing the amount of organic waste that we send to Wisconsin’s landfills is an easy and impactful way to live more sustainably. There are several strategies to reduce organic waste depending on your situation and material. There are resources available to help handle yard waste and leaves, getting free compost and mulch, cutting down on food waste at home, and more.
