Types of Carts

Garbage: Garbage carts have black lids and are collected weekly on your assigned collection day.
Recycling: Recycling carts have yellow lids and are collected every other week on your assigned collection day.
Yard waste: You can purchase a cart from the City online or purchase a container from a local retailer. With the exception of City-issued carts, all containers should have "Yard Waste" clearly marked on the them. Yard waste is picked up on weeks that recycling is not picked up on your assigned collection day.

Cart Placement & Preparation Tips

To ensure your carts are collected on time and without issues, please follow these guidelines:

Set out your carts in their designated location no later than 7:00 am on your scheduled pick up day.
The best place to put your garbage or recycling cart is:
- Curbside: Place carts in your driveway apron, not in the street
- Alley: Place carts as close as possible to the alley edge
Carts blocked by parked vehicles cannot be collected. Placing them in your driveway apron helps ensure clear access.
Provide a minimum of three feet of clearance around each cart to provide access for our automated trucks.
Position your cart with the front (lid opening) facing the street or alley. Carts facing other directions cannot be collected.
All materials must be placed loosely inside the cart prior to collection. Items packed too tightly can prevent the cart from being fully emptied.

Return Trip Fee

If your cart was not set out, inaccessible or not able to be emptied when our trucks arrived for collection, we can make a return trip for a $25 fee. Please call us at (414) 471-8422 to schedule this collection.

Once you received confirmation, you can pay the return trip fee online.

Items Placed Outside of Cart

We cannot pick up items that are placed outside of your garbage and recycling carts, and carts with excess material preventing the lid from closing cannot be collected.

Cart Maintenance

You should routinely clean the inside of your cart with a soapy water solution to reduce rodent infestation and odors.

Cart Repair

Is your garbage, recycling, or yard waste cart damaged? We can replace:

lids
wheels
axles

We are only able to service official City yard waste carts (carts with the bright green lid) and cannot repair or replace other yard waste container types. Broken or unwanted carts can be collected for a fee:

at your curb as a special collection
at the Drop Off Center

Cart Replacement & Extra Carts

Cart Replacement

If your City garbage, recycling or yard waste cart needs to be replaced, a new one can be purchased for a fee of $85 plus tax ($90.02 per cart).
If we damaged the cart, and we can't repair it, we will replace the cart free of charge.

Extra Garbage & Recycling Carts

Need another cart? A second recycling cart has a one-time fee of $85 plus tax ($90.02 per cart). The fee for a second garbage cart is $100 annually. Call us at (414) 471-8422 to ask for one or fill out the form below.
