Overview of Permit

This Street Occupancy Permit is required anytime drive approach, sidewalk or other paving or parking surface is constructed or replaced in the City public right-of-way. The standard fee for this Permit is $75, and the fee for inspections required under this Permit is $75 per inspection. 

How to Apply

You can apply online using this self-service portal (search for "Street Occupancy - Paving" in the apply permits screen). You can upload any needed documents and process payments online.

Permit Submittal Requirements 

If you are planning on replacing or widening your driveway approach, a plan showing the location of the work must be submitted with the permit application. A plan can be created from an aerial view (such as Google Maps) or from a picture. The use of an image from Google street view is acceptable. The plan should include the following information (at a minimum):

  • Width of the drive approach at the curb opening (existing and proposed)
  • Width of the driveway at the property line (existing and proposed)
  • If a sidewalk crosses the drive approach, indicate if the sidewalk will be replaced and the extent of the sidewalk replacement.

Length of Time for Permit

The permit is valid for 60 days after the start date.

Cost

The standard fee for this Permit is $75, and the fee for inspections required under this Permit is $75 per inspection.

You will receive permit application fee and inspection invoices through the self-service portal. You can pay by credit card through the self-service portal, or drop off payment in person, through mail, or by using the secure payment depository drop-off box at City Hall. Please include “Attention: Engineering Services” on envelopes which are submitted via mail or to the Secure Payment Depository drop-off box.  Make checks payable to “City of Wauwatosa” and clearly identify the purpose for the payment on the check (e.g., “Street Occupancy Permit Application”).
