Overview of Permit

A street occupancy permit is required anytime to install, repair, or relay a private utility within the public right-of-way. Some examples of private utilities include a water, sanitary or storm sewer lateral. The standard fee for the permit is $75, and the fee for inspection required under this permit is $75 per inspection. Additional fees may be required based on the scope of work.

How to Apply

You can apply online using this self-service portal (search for “Street Occupancy – Utilities” in the apply permit screen).  You can upload any needed documents and process payments online. 

Permit Submittal requirements for a utility permit

Please submit a plan showing the location of the work with your application. A plan can be created from an aerial view (such as Google maps) or from a picture. The use of an image from Google Street view is acceptable. The plan should include the following information (at a minimum):

  • Location of the proposed utility work
  • List what surfaces the proposed utility work will disturb.  For example, asphalt road, concrete road, sidewalk, grass and/or curb

Length of Time for Permit

The permit is valid for 60 days after the start date.

Cost

The standard fee for this permit is $75, and the fee for inspection required under this Permit is $75 per inspection. A refundable street deposit may be required based on the scope of work.

You will receive permit application fee, inspection, and street deposit invoices through the self-service portal.  You can pay by credit card through the self-service portal, or drop off payment in person through mail, or by using the secure payment depository drop-off box at City Hall. Please include “Attention: Engineering Services” on envelopes which are submitted via mail or to the Secure Payment Depository drop-off box.  Make checks payable to “City of Wauwatosa” and clearly identify the purpose for the payment on the check (e.g., “Street Occupancy Permit Application”).
